Project Brief

KeRi provided MEP and fire alarm engineering for the replacement of 9 passenger elevators at four Queens subway stations: Main Street on the Flushing line, and Roosevelt Ave, Queens Plaza and Jamaica/179th Street on the Queens Boulevard line. The work is one part of a New York City Transit program replacing 37 elevators at 15 stations across four boroughs, with Stantec as lead designer.

Main Street and Roosevelt Ave, two of the borough's major transfer points, carry high volume elevators, and every station stays open to the public and fully functional throughout construction. For each elevator KeRi designed new power and distribution, controls and lighting, machine room ventilation with fire and smoke dampers, heat tracing, sump pumps, and fire alarm devices in the machine rooms and shafts.

MEP Engineering Scope

What We Engineered

Elevator replacement MEP and fire alarm scope, repeated at each elevator:

• New electrical power systems and distribution panels for each elevator
• New elevator controls and lighting
• Machine room HVAC with fire and fire/smoke dampers, and heat tracing for piping
• New sump pumps replacing aging units
• New fire alarm devices within the elevator machine rooms and shafts

MR # is the MTA master reference number for the station complex. Train service as listed in the contract station list.

The Challenge

The elevators and their machine rooms were at end of life: aging 208V / 3-phase distribution, fluorescent lighting on ballasts, battery-pack emergency lighting, exhaust-fan-only HVAC without fire or smoke dampers, old sump pumps, and outdated fire alarm devices, all in stations that must stay open to the public and fully functional throughout the work.

Our Solution

KeRi designed new elevator power, controls, lighting, sump pumps, HVAC with proper damper protection, and fire alarm devices for every elevator, sequenced so each station keeps accessible service while its elevators are replaced.
