Project Brief

Egner Hall, Building 685 on Rogers Place, is home to the US Military Academy Band, and its elevator stopped short of the basement, where the band moves instruments and equipment. For the Directorate of Public Works, KeRi was the prime consultant to Intercontinental Construction Contracting, leading the architectural design with Aavart Patel, Architect, and engineering the MEP systems through 30, 60, 90 and 100 percent reviews with DPW and the band.

The existing elevator was removed and replaced, and its shaft extended down to the basement mechanical room level, which sits about two feet below the corridor. A new elevator lobby is reached by concrete ramps and landings with guardrails, and at the band's request the new opening became a double door wide enough for their largest equipment. Sanitary piping in the way was relocated and an air compressor removed and restored, and work on the upper floors was limited to rerouting third floor wiring clear of the new car.

KeRi added an elevator pit sump pump with oil sensing controls, discharging indirectly to the sanitary system rather than outdoors where it would ice the stairwell, pit lighting and disconnects, fire alarm elevator recall, and a ductless split system to cool the basement elevator equipment room, with its refrigerant piping routed through the basement to keep the band's first floor storage undisturbed.

What We Engineered

Prime consultant design for the Egner Hall elevator replacement:

• Existing elevator replaced, with the shaft extended to the basement
• New elevator lobby with concrete ramps, landings and a double door for band equipment
• Elevator pit sump pump with oil sensing controls and indirect discharge to sanitary
• Ductless split cooling for the basement elevator equipment room
• Pit lighting, disconnects, fire alarm elevator recall and rerouted third floor wiring
• Staging plan and review with DPW and the Academy Band at each design stage

The Challenge

The band's elevator did not reach the basement, which sits below the corridor level, and the new stop had to fit around existing piping, a mechanical room and an occupied music building.

Our Solution

As prime consultant, KeRi extended the elevator to the basement with a new ramped lobby and double door, and added the sump pump, cooling, lighting and fire alarm recall the new elevator needed.
