Project Brief

The Wood-Ridge Recreation Complex at Westmont Station was planned in phases: a concession building and a garage building first, followed by a recreation building with basketball courts and a turf field. KeRi was the MEP and fire protection engineer to DMR Architects for the first phase, taking it from progress sets through bid and permit documents.

The concession building centers on a commercial kitchen with fryers, a broiler and an ice machine, served by a grease-rated kitchen hood exhaust, a gas-fired make-up air unit interlocked with the hood, and a gas rooftop unit, with an energy recovery ventilator and a heat pump for the restrooms and a grease interceptor on the drainage. The garage building is heated by gas-fired unit heaters with garage exhaust and a PTAC for its office. Each building has its own 200 A, 277/480 V service and step-down transformer, and the garage includes an automatic transfer switch ready for a temporary generator. KeRi also designed the natural gas and domestic water services, with backflow prevention, and stubbed domestic and sprinkler water mains for the future recreation building.

What We Engineered

MEP systems for the first phase of the recreation complex:

• Commercial kitchen hood exhaust, gas make-up air unit and gas rooftop unit for the concession building
• Energy recovery ventilator and heat pump for the restrooms
• Gas-fired unit heaters, garage exhaust and PTAC for the garage building
• Two 200 A, 277/480 V services, with a generator-ready transfer switch at the garage
• Natural gas and domestic water services with backflow prevention and a grease interceptor
• Domestic and sprinkler water mains stubbed for the future recreation building

The Challenge

A phased park had to open with a working concession kitchen and garage while leaving the site ready for a larger recreation building still to come.

Our Solution

KeRi gave each building its own service and systems, including a full commercial kitchen exhaust and make-up air package, and ran the water mains the future recreation building will need.
